That is the real value of Horizons Unlimited. From 20 to 23 August 2026, the organisation’s Swiss Travellers Meeting returns to Meierskappel for its eighth annual overland adventure event. It brings together people travelling on two, three and four wheels, from first-time dreamers to riders with continents behind them.
This is not a polished motorcycle show where the machines are separated from the people who use them. It is a practical gathering built around experience: what worked, what failed, what broke, what mattered and why the next journey is still worth taking.

One of the announced 2026 presentations captures exactly why this event matters. Rasmus Geiger plans to share a journey into the Mauritanian Sahara on a 30-year-old Yamaha TT600. The trip involved deep sand, remote routes, extensive fuel capacity and long distances far beyond the last reliable tarmac.
It is the kind of story that cuts through the idea that adventure requires the newest or most expensive motorcycle. Preparation matters. Mechanical understanding matters. Range, judgement and the ability to adapt matter. The year printed on the registration document matters far less.

Why Meierskappel works
The venue sits in Central Switzerland with access to some of the country’s strongest motorcycle roads and the Alps within reach. The official programme includes weather-dependent ride-outs and workshops on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The final schedule is expected roughly one week before the meeting and can change because presenters are volunteers and travellers themselves.
The Erlebnisbauernhof Gerbe provides an official campsite with showers, toilets, hot water and Wi-Fi. There is a fireplace, a barn for workshops and presentations, on-site catering and nearby swimming options. Tents do not require a separate camping reservation, but advance event registration helps the organisers understand attendance because space is more limited than in earlier years.
Who should attend?
The rider planning a first major trip. You will learn faster by asking experienced travellers specific questions than by watching another hundred gear videos.
The experienced overlander. The event depends on people sharing hard-earned knowledge, and the informal conversations are often as useful as the scheduled presentations.
The classic enduro owner. Older motorcycles are not treated as decorative objects here. They are tools for travel, provided the rider understands their limits and maintenance.
The brand or workshop with something genuinely useful. Products and services can belong at an overland meeting, but only when they solve real problems. Empty lifestyle marketing is easy to spot around people who have crossed deserts.
How to get the most from the weekend
- Arrive with three practical questions you genuinely need answered.
- Photograph clever homemade solutions, but ask permission and understand why they were built that way.
- Attend at least one talk outside your planned region or motorcycle category.
- Do not hide a failed setup. Failures create the most useful conversations.
- Leave space in the programme for campfire discussions and unplanned encounters.
The RTWR verdict
Horizons Unlimited Switzerland is one of the rare events where dreaming and practical preparation occupy the same field. It can inspire a route, prevent an expensive mistake, introduce a future riding partner or simply remind someone that the trip they keep postponing is possible.
