Edition 01
The Rottweiler Motors Price Index is updated regularly to reflect the Swiss used motorcycle market. This first edition is based on motorcycles advertised on MotoScout24 during July 2026 and is intended as a snapshot of the market at that time.
The used motorcycle market changes constantly.
Some motorcycles quietly become collector's items. Others remain surprisingly affordable despite offering outstanding reliability, timeless design and genuine riding enjoyment.
The Rottweiler Motors Price Index tracks some of our favourite retro, heritage and adventure motorcycles on the Swiss market. Rather than focusing on auction results or exceptional collector bikes, this index reflects real asking prices found on MotoScout24 and what those prices tell us about today's market.
Our goal isn't to predict the future. It's to help riders understand where genuine value still exists.
How We Calculate the Index
Each model is evaluated using current Swiss MotoScout24 advertisements. We consider:
- Typical asking prices
- Number of available motorcycles
- Condition of advertised examples
- Mileage
- Long-term ownership costs
- Collector interest
- Parts availability
The Rottweiler Score is our editorial assessment of overall value. It is not based solely on price. A motorcycle can be expensive and still receive a high score if it offers exceptional ownership value.

What the Index Tells Us
The biggest surprise this month is the Yamaha SR400. While the SR500 has firmly entered collector territory, several excellent SR400s remain available between CHF 3,500 and CHF 4,700, making them one of the strongest value propositions for riders who appreciate simple, air-cooled single-cylinder motorcycles.
The XT600 continues to hold its position as one of the best adventure motorcycles for the money. Prices have remained relatively stable, while demand for lightweight adventure bikes continues to support values.
BMW Airheads continue their gradual climb. Finding an honest R80 below CHF 7,000 has become increasingly difficult, and original R80 G/S models now occupy an entirely different price category.
The Kawasaki W650 has quietly become one of the most desirable modern classics in Switzerland. Availability remains limited, keeping prices surprisingly resilient.
Meanwhile, motorcycles such as the Honda NX650 Dominator, BMW R1150 GS and Kawasaki KLE500 remain significantly undervalued considering their capability. They may lack the collector status of an Airhead or SR500, but they continue to represent exceptional ownership value.
Best Value Right Now
| Category | Motorcycle | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Best Retro Buy | Yamaha SR400 | Classic styling, modern reliability and still remarkably affordable. |
| Best Adventure Buy | Yamaha XT600 | Outstanding capability with stable prices and excellent parts support. |
| Best Touring Value | BMW R1150 GS | Long-distance comfort and shaft drive at a surprisingly accessible price. |
| Hidden Gem | Honda NX650 Dominator | Still overlooked despite proven reliability and strong aftermarket support. |
| Future Collector | Yamaha SR400 | One of the last true air-cooled retro singles still within reach. |
Our Editorial Verdict
If we had CHF 5,000 to spend today, we would buy the Yamaha SR400.
It offers nearly everything enthusiasts love about the legendary SR500 while remaining considerably more affordable. Fuel injection improves everyday usability, the aftermarket is extensive, and current Swiss asking prices still leave room in the budget for servicing, tyres and a few carefully chosen upgrades.
The XT600 remains a very close second. For riders dreaming of Alpine passes, gravel roads or a future trip to Morocco, very few motorcycles offer the same combination of simplicity, reliability and genuine adventure capability.
Methodology & Disclaimer
The Rottweiler Motors Price Index – July 2026 is based on publicly advertised asking prices observed on MotoScout24 during July 2026. It reflects editorial analysis rather than completed sales transactions. Asking prices do not necessarily represent final selling prices, and listings may be edited, sold or removed at any time. Our Rottweiler Score combines current asking prices, availability, condition, ownership costs, collector interest and long-term value to provide an editorial assessment of each model. Every motorcycle should be inspected carefully before purchase, and buyers should independently verify condition, documentation and maintenance history.
